Applicants applying for admission to the Engineering Mechanics programs should use the Virginia Tech Graduate School Application.

The completed application includes:

  • Virginia Tech Graduate School on-line application form
  • A non-refundable application fee that will be due at the time of your application submission. A limited number of students are eligible for fee waivers. To learn more about eligibility, visit the Graduate School fee waiver site.

To start your application, you will need:

  • Transcripts. Include a scanned copy of your unofficial college transcripts with your online application, then arrange for an official copy to be sent to us after you receive an offer of admission.
  • Letters of recommendation. All letters of recommendation must be completed through the online process as part of your application. When in the online application, enter the recommendation section and follow the instructions.
  • GRE scores. All applicants must provide official GRE scores. GRE scores must be sent electronically from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to the Graduate School. Scores are good for 5 years from the date of testing to the date of application submission. Have the testing agency send official scores to Virginia Tech Graduate School, code 5859.
  • Statement of Purpose. The statement of purpose articulates and demonstrates an applicant's specific qualifications and what that applicant's end goal might be once their work is completed. This document is submitted only through the online application.
  • Resume/CV. When in the online application, you will be asked to attach a current resume/CV.
  • TOEFL/IELTS (International Students Only): All international applicants must provide official TOEFL or IELTS scores. Scores are good for two years from the date of testing to the date of application submission. TOEFL/IELTS scores are not required if the applicant has graduated from a US institution or from a non-US accredited institution where English is the official language of instruction. TOEFL/IELTS scores are not required of US permanent residents and US naturalized citizens. Please do not apply if your score is below the minimum. Your application will not be reviewed by the faculty. To learn more about the minimum score, see the Graduate School Testing Requirements.

We do not do pre-reviews of applications. Therefore, please refrain from sending any of the following to us directly: test scores, copies of transcripts, resume/CV’s. We will evaluate your application materials once you officially apply via the Graduate School.
