Hockey Helmet Ratings


A total of 38 hockey helmets that have been evaluated using the STAR evaluation system are included in the Virginia Tech Helmet Ratings.  Helmets with more stars provide a reduction in concussion risk compared to helmets with less stars.  Group ratings are differentiated by pre-determined thresholds.

*The STAR value represents the theoretical incidence of concussion for one player season assuming that the player experienced the same range of head impact conditions and frequency as outlined in the Hockey STAR methodology (Rowson, 2015). There is strong consensus in the scientific community that underreporting of concussion does occur; however, there is no consensus on the magnitude of this problem. For this reason, two STAR values are presented that encompass a wide range of underreporting rates. The first STAR value presents the incidence of concussion with no underreporting. The larger second STAR value presents the incidence of concussion with a ten to one underreporting factor included. The overall star rating is determined based on thresholds established for the larger STAR value. Regardless of underreporting, the higher rated helmets are better at lowering both linear and rotational accelerations for the broad range of head impact conditions experienced by players.
